Matthew, and Relationships in Three Easy Steps

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Susan brought a prayer request to my attention today. We know a young-ish, unwed mother. When she found out she was pregnant, she and the father moved in together, but didn’t get married. The father decided that the grass was greener somewhere else, and moved out. Now, the mom is having a family gathering and the father, as well as his mother, will be there. Susan asked me to pray for the mom, who’ll be in an uncomfortable situation of playing hostess to the man who didn’t want her, as well as his mother. I tried to use this moment as a parenting opportunity, and point out the difficulties that are avoided when a man and woman love each other, get married, and then have kids. Julia said something to the effect of “I’m not sure I want kids.”

Matthew jumped in and said “I want to have two boys when I get married. But first, I have to findĀ  a good wife.” Susan and I praised him, and said that’s exactly what he should do. He went on to explain his plan in three easy steps:

“First,” he said, “you find a good wife. Next, you always treat her right. And then always make her a good breakfast on Mothers’ Day.”

There are men out there who could really take a lesson from this four year old.

Memorial Day Weekend Wrap Up

Monday, May 25th, 2009

It actually started Friday afternoon. I had put some hours in at the office the previous Sunday (for billing day), so I decided to take those hours off on Friday. I told Susan I’d pick some lunch up for the kids at McD’s, and I’d leave the office around 12:30. Well, as you might guess, it all broke loose as I was trying to leave. About 45 minutes later, I busted out, hurrying to get to my 2pm tire appointment. After the tire, I came home, took a little nap, and then headed to my gig at My Fork in Winterport. The gig was fine, though sparsely attended.

Saturday was the big day. I got up a little before 8, and made breakfast. I had been inspired by something I saw on TV at the gig, and decided to parlay that over to breakfast: caramel apple waffles. Yeah, they were good. I guess it was sometime around 10:30 that we headed out for the day’s trip: going to watch the alewives run up the Damariscotta Mills fish ladder. Susan and I thought we’d have fun, but we never realized how much fun we’d have! It was a blast. The high point of the day was a horse ride in a wagon. Hard seats, no brakes or suspension. A firm ride. Towards the end, the driver really had the horses turn it on. They were galloping through town, Susan and I and the kids laughing, me 1/2 afraid one of the kids would fall out of the back. We had lunch in Damariscotta at Reunion Station–that restaurant made out of the old train cars. The place wasn’t the cleanest, but the food was decent and the prices cheap, so it wasn’t so bad.

Sunday was the regular kinda stuff. Church in the morning. Lunch was at Mom’s; Lisa made spaghetti. The boys had their hair cut. I took a quick nap in the afternoon. The boys and I washed the scooter. Evening church.

I was up at a little before 7am today. I took a long scooter ride down to Spruce Head. I took the kids to Lowes to get some stuff for projects around the house. I spent most of the day washing windows, and putting up new blinds downstairs. I managed to get three loads of laundry done too. I made a trip to the grocery store–on the scoot!–and picked up some stuff for supper. I made some hamburgers on the grill. Now, I’m kicking back, relaxing. It was a very nice weekend.

My Quicky-Roo MI-5

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Assuming you must pick one:

1) Motorcycle or Jet Ski? Why?

I never driven a Jet Ski. I have ridden a motorcycle. And while I do own a scooter, and while I do love riding around on two wheels, I think I’d rather have a Jet Ski. It’s so much less practical, but seems like it would be even more fun. I’d use it less. It’s harder to find someone to repair it. I’d have to tow it everywhere. But still, more fun. (I think.)

2) Fruit pie or cream pie? Which kind? Why?

Cream pie. Specifically, chocolate cream pie, with homemade cooked pudding, ver ythick, very dense, and heavy on the cocoa p0wder. Schmear whipped cream on top, or even Cool Whip if you have to. And a regular crust, please, not graham cracker. I like graham cracker ok, but would prefer a real crust.

3) Book or magazine? How come?

I don’t seem to have enough time for books. A magazine allows me to read–which I like–but not have to devote myself to one style for a month. I can pick and choose the parts I like the best.

4) Hot beverage or cool drink? What’s your fav?

I’ve been a milk drinker for years, but if I had to pick only one drink, I think I’d have to take hot black coffee.

5) What’s on the grill on Monday–beef, pork, or fowl? What’s the specifics?

I’m a pork guy. For myself, I think I’m making Cheddarwurst sausages. Susan is a steak person. I like steak on the grill too (specifically bone in rib steaks), but would prefer spare ribs, pork chops, or some kind of sausage.

Friday Fill In #125

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

1. Moving really stinks; I’m not looking forward to it.

2. The best thing about the iPod touch is how many of the cool aps are free.

3. My best quality is up for debate; I think it’s my melancholy.

4. Much of managing people is in the details.

5. In nearly 10 years, the current president will be out of office. Who do we think will be in the White House then?

6. My bed and some ibuprofen is what I need right now!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to playing a gig in Winterport, tomorrow my plans include doing something fun with the kids (if their fever is gone) and Sunday, I want to ride the scooter!

The Bobs

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I was listening to the comdey station on the XM while I was in the shower this morning, and heard this song called “The Tight Pants Tango.” I thought it was a riot. When I got out of the shower, I hopped online to find out about the group. The Bobs are an a capella comdey music group. Consider combining Bobby McFerin, The Manhattan Transfer, and Wierd Al. Ta-da! The lyrics of The Tight Pants Tango are about trying to answer your cell phone while wearing skin tight pants. I really like their promo video too. If it sounds like something you might like, do check them out.
