Shawn over at Comics Pundit found a great article on the origins of the hat. It’s very interesting! You should go check it out. The results will, I think, surprise you. And as a tease, let me say this: The answer is related to Indiana Jones!
My dad has a hat like that saved from when he was a young boy. I remember being fascinated with that hat when I was young, and loved all the little toys, bells and do-dads sewn to it – I think a lot of the boggles came from cracker jack boxes.
